Theological advisor to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, John Chryssavgis, has announced that an Orthodox Christian Great Council is scheduled to take place in 2016. Given Chryssavgis' position, the article's contents are a credible representation of Patriarch Bartholomew's own thoughts.
The focus is on merging non-Orthodox churches while mutually isolating Orthodox Churches and Monasteries, particularly the ones who wish to remain traditional, which Chryssavgis refers to as "separatist". More telling adjectives in his article, like "rigid", "xenophobia", "stifling", "supremist nationalism", and "obsessed with nationalistic interests" emphasize Chryssavgis' point.
Orthodoxy has always been fully inclusive of all members of humanity, all races, all cultures, and regardless of any past behaviour and/or religion, all have always been welcome. The reason, I believe, for (redundantly) focusing on inclusion is to further Orthodox missionary work in other countries, alongside non-Orthodox churches, in the hopes of continued progressive dialogue that could eventually unite their churches with ours. More specifically though, the grand purpose is to appeal to newcomers. However, all this is to the exclusion of currently Orthodox groups who are considered to be fundamentalists. Why? Because their views interfere with an expansive agenda.
"Will we see a condemnation of separatist groups and a new commitment to ecumenical openness?", advisor Chryssavgis asks. A condemnation by whom, and in what manner? Pray tell. Biblical Reference ~ Hebrews 13:8 : Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.
